Right on the Guadiana River is the only cross border zipline from Spain to Portugal in the world. It connects the town of Sanlucar de Guadiana in Spain to Alcoutim in Portugal. I found out about it by doing some research online and became obsessed with the fact that you can zipline between two countries over a river and change time zones in the process.

If you prefer a quick video version of the experience and info: check out one of my latest videos on YouTube.

I’ve been living in Lisbon since February of 2024 so when my parents decided they’d be visiting in October for a road trip, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to do this!

How to Book

The company you’ll fly with is Limite Zero and they suggest reserving your time slot online at least 24 hours beforehand. Sometimes the page will redirect you to pay and other times it won’t. If not, then you’ll have to pay in person, preferably cash.

On the day of your experience, arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand to check in and ensure your slot. The experience costs 25 euros per person.

Zipline Location

This cross-border zipline experience starts in Sanlucar de Guadiana, in the province of Huelva in Spain and ends in Alcoutim, in the province of the Algarve in Portugal.

Both are small towns with the Guadiana River separating the towns and countries.

Spain and Portugal have a one hour time difference. As you zipline across the river from Spain to Portugal you will also go backwards in time one hour.

Make a full day of the experience by spending half the day in one town and the other half in the other. Because when else will you have an experience like this?

Zipline from Spain to Portugal Experience

Once it’s your turn to fly across borders, Limite Zero will take you in a car, van or jeep up to the take off point. My mom joined me in this experience and I’m glad I was able to do this with her.

On the way up, you’ll pass by Sanlucar de Guadiana’s castle. We didn’t have plans to visit so we didn’t have the time, but if it interests you then definitely arrive earlier or head here after your return to Spain if you’re staying here.

After parking, it’s about a 5 minute walk on a dirt road to where we start. I suggest wearing sneakers as it will be more comfortable and I think is also part of their protocol.

Don’t wear a hat or anything too loose that could fly away.

Bring a mount, a hanging phone case or a foot strap to hold your phone to get some different video angles. I used a hanging phone case without problem. I’ve seen other YouTube videos where people use various other mounts for their videos. Ask your guides if this is okay to avoid any issues.

Before starting, they go over all the details and safety precautions.

Then everyone heads down one by one. It only takes less than a minute to get across.

You land in Alcoutim in the middle of a field. There’s a short walking trail to get out to the road, but it’s really in the middle of nowhere. To get into the center of town where either your car is parked or to take the boat, it’ll be about a 15 minute walk.

Overall I’m glad I was able to have this zipline from Spain to Portugal experience. I hope these tips will help you have an amazing experience as well!
