“I wish I could travel as much as you do”

If I had a dollar for every time I was told this statement, I’d be able to afford all the trips I want?. I wish I was exaggerating. And it’s not just people I don’t know from the internet, but family and friends too that tell me this.

This has only been possible through sacrifice and by prioritizing travel over most things. But mainly, a lot of sacrifice.

It has meant saying no to hanging out with friends or doing activities I would have loved to do in order to save. It’s cost me to grow certain friendships with people who prioritized going out every weekend or going out to dinner a lot instead of more low key plans to save for a trip.

It has meant holding down 2-3 jobs at a time while living in the US. If you follow me on IG you’ve seen me kinda bash the US for things, but one thing I’ll definitely say is that I’ve benefited from and appreciate is the ease in finding a job. They may not have been career moves for me, but they were enough so I could save and plan my next adventure.

It has meant me not being as independent early on as I would have liked. Sure, I could have stopped living with my parents after graduating college, and I wouldn’t have seen even a fifth of what I have been able to. Living with my parents for a few years more after college led me to see at least 12 more US states and visit 7 new countries.

Sacrifices must be made to get what you really want.

For many I do understand this isn’t even a possible choice or one they don’t want to take. We each make decisions based on our circumstances or that feel most right for us. This felt right to me for various reasons, mainly that I would be able to travel more often. But it did keep me from living closer to friends or being in an area that would have led me to meet more people and be more social.

Every decision has its positives and negatives. I had to weigh out the pros and cons to see what would be better for me.

I prioritized what mattered most to me which time and time again has been travel. If you want to read about how I became interested in travel, read this post!
